All American Old Time Radio Show Classic

Cavalcade of America
4 CD Set

For a small taste of this great series,
listen to the preview below.

This show comes on 4 CDs In MP3 Format

Cavalcade of America, a radio program broadcast from 1935 to 1953, pioneered the use of anthology drama for company audio advertising. The show originally aired on the Columbia Broadcast System (CBS) and was sponsored by the DuPont Company.

It was on CBS from October 9, 1935 to May 29th, 1939 and NBC from January 2nd, 1940 to March 31st, 1953. Television adaptations were on NBC from October 1st, 1952 to September 2, 1953 and then ABC from September 9th, 1953 to June 21st, 1955 and September 6th, 1955 and June 4th, 1957.

Walter Huston was the host from September 18th, 1944 through February 12th, 1945. The writers included an impressive array, with such names as: Arthur Miller, Norman Rosten, Robert Tallman, Peter Lyon, Robert Richards, Stuart Hawkins, Arthur Arent, Edith Sommer, Halsted Welles, Henry Denker, Priscilla Kent, Virginia Radcliffe, Frank Gabrielson, Margaret Lewerth, Morton Wishengrad, George Faulkner, and Irve Tunick. The creator of the show was Roy Durstine.

Cavalcade of America documented historical events using stories of individual courage, individual initiative and achievement. This was consistent with DuPont's overall conservative philosophy and legacy as an American company dating back to 1802. The company's motto "Maker of better things for better living through chemistry" was read at the beginning of each program, and the dramas emphasized humanitarian progress, particularly improvements in the lives of women, often through technological innovation.

DuPont's products were primarily not for public consumption, so there was no purpose in promoting them through advertising. As a solution to DuPont's troubles, Roy Durstine then creative director of Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn proposed the creation and sponsorship of Cavalcade of America using the company motto. This was to be an important element in the successful re-branding of DuPont as an American legacy engaged in making products for the well-being of Americans and humanity in general.

On May 15, 1940 DuPont made nylon women's hosiery available to the public and began an advertising blitz. The day was designated "N" day by DuPont's marketeers and an entire episode of Cavalcade of America was purchased. This show was markedly different: DuPont selected a "typical" housewife to interview G. P. Hoff, Director of Research of DuPont's Nylon Division. In the interview, which was rigged, Hoff had the opportunity to say many dazzling things about the virtues of nylon. The next morning thousands of women lined up in front of department stores hours before they opened to get nylon hose, or what we today call nylons. 750,000 nylons had been manufactured for N-Day, and they all sold out in the first day they went on sale.

We have a wonderful movie in our Vintage Clothes & Fashions Collection
Fashions Of The Past Volume 1, The Story of A Star in which the “star" of the film is "the stocking". Very entertaining.

In 1953 DuPont switched its advertising strategy from radio to television, and Cavalcade of America became a television series.

So grab your drink of choice, and sit down for a virtual cornucopia of not only Hollywood talent but those in the theatre as well. With notable figures such as Chester Morris, Ida Lupino,  Robert Young,  Thomas Mitchell, Charles Bouvier, Donna Reed, Henry Fonda and too many more to list,  and with over 125 hours and 300 plus episodes you will be enthralled for a very long time.
