WW II: The Home Front Chronicles is an 8 DVD set that spans the years
1941 to 1945. From the opening 1941 documentary film Ring of Steel, which is
narrated by Spencer Tracy to the last film, Combat America (1945) narrated
by Clark Gable (and in many scenes too) you get the sense and feel of what
the American people were going through, the love for this country, the
pride, and yes, fear for the young men and women putting their lives on the
line.
However, there is a feeling throughout all the films that America would
prevail, we would win no matter what it took. That is the America, and the
people I will always remember and be thankful to. It makes me not only stand
a bit taller, but also proud to be an American. To see the sacrifices
our parents, grandparents and those still living from this greatest
generation went through, is humbling. Personally I think we have lost this
feeling, but then again that is just my opinion and what is so nice is that
I can be free to have an opinion. Thanks to them. Enjoy and watch the people
that made this country the great one it is today!
This series is mainly concerned with how the folks stateside supported
those overseas, their contribution and sacrifices and how they were an
integral part of the war effort.
Volume 3 runs over an hour.
1943
The problem of youth crime during World War II and the fear that America
would lose a generation of children to delinquency, is excellently done in
the 1943 film, As the Twig Is Bent. It promotes family values in the
midst of wartime. This film was a response to World War II's fracturing of
the family. Parents worked late shifts or were in the military, and
children, especially teenagers, ran amuck. The film details the problems
that ensued such as juvenile delinquency, and more.10:49
This 1943 World War II-era film, Troop Train, shows a whole troop
being transported, vehicles and all across the country. You get to see the
full coordination of effort, from staging and assembly of the car, cargo and
passenger, and the journey through the American countryside. An inside of
the troop and their eating, sleeping, training, drilling and what they do
for recreation is also shown. Lots of fun and as a bonus some great country
shots too! 13:15
The 1943 film, When Work Is Done is a great inside look of how
American civilians sacrificed and dealt with the problems on the home front
during WW II. The film shows us how war plant workers and the townspeople of
Sylacauga, Alabama work together to construct facilities and organize
activities. The town really came together to make the war plant workers feel
very welcome. Really shows the home front life in a World War II factory
town. 8:55
Another wonderful 1943 film is Three Cities, where again we get to
see how America mobilizes and how everyone helped one another during war
time.
10:08
All Out for Victory (ca. 1943) shows the contributions of handicapped
and disabled workers to World War II industrial production. We get to see
how the blind workers helped by unraveling the ends of parachute straps. A
one armed man using a hole punch machine. Deaf workers working in the nosier
areas. Our elders came out of retirement to also chip in and offer their
well-honed skills. Of course, let us not forgot all the woman who also
contributed to the effort.
