WW II: The Home Front Chronicles is an 8 DVD set that spans the years
1941 to 1945. From the opening 1941 documentary film Ring of Steel, which is
narrated by Spencer Tracy to the last film, Combat America (1945) narrated
by Clark Gable (and in many scenes too) you get the sense and feel of what
the American people were going through, the love for this country, the
pride, and yes, fear for the young men and women putting their lives on the
line.
However, there is a feeling throughout all the films that America would
prevail, we would win no matter what it took. That is the America, and the
people I will always remember and be thankful to. It makes me not only stand
a bit taller, but also proud to be an American. To see the sacrifices
our parents, grandparents and those still living from this greatest
generation went through, is humbling. Personally I think we have lost this
feeling, but then again that is just my opinion and what is so nice is that
I can be free to have an opinion. Thanks to them. Enjoy and watch the people
that made this country the great one it is today!
This series is mainly concerned with how the folks stateside supported
those overseas, their contribution and sacrifices and how they were an
integral part of the war effort.
Volume 1 runs over an hour.
1941
The 1941 film Ring of Steel is an excellent documentary done in the
early days of WWII. It is narrated by Spencer Tracy, who was a veteran of WW
I, and details how our U.S. armed forces have protected the home front. 8:36
Safeguarding Military Information focuses on the old saying “Loose
lips sink ships.” Featuring Walter Huston and Eddie Bracken this 1941 film
warns Americans to be careful what they say in public. The writing,
directing and acting is superb.
The United States Military made an effort to prevent enemy saboteurs from
gleaning sensitive information from civilians and military personnel. The
movie stresses the importance of secrecy on the part of military personnel
and workers engaged in defense activities, and shows the results of careless
talk. 10:21
The 1941 movie, Victory Is Our Business is a patriotic motivational
film for World War II industrial workers. The narrator is a bit loud and
stresses the importance of manufacturing war time machinery at the Chevrolet
plants. Lots of patriotic verbiage and a great deal of propaganda,
regardless a must see movie! 10:09
1942
Campus on the March is a 1942 movie with U.S. colleges and
universities retooling to assist war effort. The movie shows in great detail
how colleges across the nation prepared for war. Lots of military training
and training women to assume jobs that were usually done by men. Also many
scenes of military units marching around college. 18:07
The 1942 movie, Close Harmony discusses the need for unity between
labor and management as the U.S. mobilizes for World War II. The movie also
explains to the public the delay in retooling factories for war production.
All that is involved, like installing new machinery, getting new materials,
drawing up new manufacturing plans, and retraining workers. Quite a bit of
historical interest, as it gives you an idea of some of the rumors going
around about war production in the early days of the war. Plus you get to
see lots of great looking barbershops, remember those, I do. 10:35
In the 1942 movie, The Arm Behind the Army, the "arm behind the army"
is Industry! The success of the Army on the firing line depends upon the
success of labor and industry on the production line. And the security of
American industry and labor depends upon the success of the American Army, .
The film shows what happened in Vienna, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Holland, and
France and much more. The movie shows the positive appeal that was made for
unity, both between management and labor, and between civilian war workers
and the armed forces. 10:21
