Volume 1
Courtesy & Responsibility
For a small taste of this great DVD,
watch the preview below.
In our first volume we will talk
about every day courtesy; sharing and playing with others, our
obligations, exhibiting good citizenship, being trustworthy and the
importance of family in developing our behaviors and manners.
Enjoy almost
60 minutes of vintage social behavior.
The 1948 film, Everyday Courtesy, is a very endearing film about manners.
Very well acted and presented. Bill, brings him mom to school so that she
can see the class display on courtesy. The children have made lots of
posters, which are very realistic and what makes the film so charming.
Courtesy in connection with invitations, telephone conversations,
introductions and entertaining guests. Today we might find it a bit formal,
but I for one finished watching wishing that more people today followed
these basic rules. 9:10
Let's Play Fair is a 1949 film made with children in mind. An
excellent film that teaches the values of sharing, taking turns, obeying
rules as the basic elements of fair play among one’s siblings, with our
stars Herb and Billy. This is a wonderful film as it offers lots of great
questions that can help to start a dialogue with your children and behaving
properly. 8:41
Playing Together, a 1950 film is the story of Donny and Duncan and their day
of fun. It starts with Donny and Duncan having a picnic at the park. Donny
wants to swim after their picnic, but Duncan reminds him they have to wait
an hour first, so off to the playground they go. Before they leave the
picnic though, Duncan picks up their mess, as Donny forgot to do his.
Unfortunately, at the playground one of the boys is hogging the equipment
and showing off, so they don’t stay too long and go off to the swim club.
There are some events going on so they sit and watch. Even though one of
Duncan’s friends loses, he still tells him he did a good job. When the
events are over, Donny and Duncan get to have lots of fun swimming. They are
both mindful of the rules at the swim club while they are there. After
swimming they ride their bikes for some ice cream and then walk off eating
their ice cream and pushing their bikes. The film brought back a lot of
memories for me, as I was the oldest and can remember taking my sister and
brother to the pool and spending all day there swimming. Teaching my sister
and brother to swim, races, and then walking back home, and stopping for
some ice cream, of course. The film shows that you can still have lots of
fun while minding your manners, following some rules and exhibiting good
behavior during leisure time. 9:59
The 1950 film, A Date With Your Family,
narrated by Hugh Beaumont advises children to do whatever is necessary to
achieve harmonious family relations, especially during the family dinner.
Remember as you watch that this is 57 years ago and the stereotypes and
portrait of family and how members treat one another is going to differ
vastly from today. Watch it for the era and with an eye to teaching children
good manners, courtesy and responsibility. Having a family dinner was the
highlight of the day then, as we all got to tell one another what we did and
how our day was. 10:00
And now some outtakes from the 1950 film, A Date With Your Family, these
silent outtakes from the classic social guidance film, "Date With Your
Family" show some bloopers, flub ups, and a deleted scene of "daughter"
washing dishes, getting tired and wiping the sweat off of her brow, she also
seemed to have a hard time to keep from cracking up. Suggestion: Be sure to
watch the film before the outtakes. 7:14
The 1965 film, Jay Can Do It, is a wonderful story about the McCloud
family. Jay is the star, but we also get to meet his mom, dad, brothers and
friends too. We follow Jay through his chores, watching and talking to his
brothers, cooking for himself and brothers, building a tree house with his
friend Carl, trying to catch his dog Fifi and making his first visit to the
police station. We also see him with his family coloring Easter eggs,
visiting his neighbor to watch her take care of a fallen bird and then the
McCloud family during their Easter dinner. A wonderful family film and a
must see for all. Great way to show your children that there is lots for
them to do both inside and outside the house that is very creative and fun.
Plus that members of the family help one another. 12:29
