Radio and Radio Stations: Their Impact On Daily Life shows how entwined
radio was in our lives, from daily news, sports, weather, entertainment, to
emergency reporting. In this age of the internet, we tend to forget how
radio played much that same role in its era.
How many of you can remember when the transistor radio came out. Wow, now
we could take our music to the beach, on our bikes and a whole lot more. It
was like a new freedom.
Well, this DVD will bring back some of those memories and moments.
Enjoy almost an hour and a half of fascinating radio
history.
Radio and Television (1940)
This movie presents an historical look at the radio industry as it existed
in 1940. Of particular interest, the movie shows many of the potential
occupations at various levels in the industry. It also introduces the new
industry of television, emphasizing its need for specially skilled workers.
This contains very useful imagery of the electronic media in the pre-World
War II era.
Aside from the historical significance of movies of this type, I always find
it amazing to see where we came from in an industry. To see how things were
done 60 plus years ago and to see how easy they are in comparison today,
makes me marvel that they got anything done back then. It is a real
testament to the pioneers of radio and the communications industry and we
owe them a debt of gratitude.
Hear and Now (1958)
This movie shows many of the ways radio brings news and information to
Americans. A great bonus is the spectacular footage of many news events
covered by radio and images everyday life in the late 1950s. It even covers
explains how radio serves in the Cold War and during natural disasters with
the emergency broadcasting system.
Television exploded in the mid-fifties, and many radio stations saw it as
their tombstone. This reminds us of how much of a role radio played in our
lives in this era, and how much we have lost in this age of sound bite news.
The Big Bounce (1960)
This is the story of the Echo communications satellite project, and how
scientists learned to bounce a radio signal off a big balloon. This film,
made by Bell Labs, documents the first satellite telephone transmissions,
using a satellite balloon named Echo. It wasn't long until satellites were
used not only in telephone transmissions, but in radio and more. It is
fascinating to see the humble beginnings of what today is a satellite system
that has so many satellites in orbit that we are actually thinking we may
run out of room in some orbits. There is a great piece showing President
Eisenhower's recorded message.
Plane Talk (1965)
This is a very interesting look at how radio and other electronic systems
are used in the airline industry. It shows the varied forms of
communications used by commercial air carriers in confirming reservations,
preparing aircraft for flight, monitoring aircraft in flight and maintaining
air-to-ground contact. A fascinating look at passenger airline operations at
the moment when air travel was just becoming a mass phenomenon. If you have
an interest in knowing what the state of the art electronic systems were
like in the 60's then this film is a must see. The footage of the airplanes
is great bonus to an outstanding movie.
WJR: One of a Kind (1966)
Story of radio station WJR, Detroit with many scenes with local radio
personalities in the studio and people listening to the radio at home, in
the ballpark at work and outdoors. J.P. McCarthy gives us a nostalgic look
back at Detroit of the early 1960's.
The film which is introduced by Lowell Thomas, who introduces the main
narrator, J.P. McCarthy who tells us about the wonders of WJR radio. And
what a radio station it is! There is a great clip which features Ernie
Harwell in the broadcast booth, calling a play by Norman Cash and also Ernie
interviewing Al Lopez.
A very good early 1960's film showing the reach of WJR, but it demonstrates
the tremendous reach that most major radio stations had in that era. It has
a neat section where it talks about the reach for advertisers and seeing
some of the brands they talk about is like a trip down memory lane.
This is a wonderful look back at the type of varied, live local radio that
used to be found all over the country but has been lost to media mergers, TV
and the internet.
